Three Weeks Into 146

A sophomore in high school was wearing his 146 bracelet at soccer practice last week when one of his teammates asked him what it meant.

Later, he told me something so cool:  “I was ready. I knew what to say because I had already been thinking about what 146 meant to me.”

That’s the whole idea behind 146. There is something powerful about seeing a young person excited and ready to talk about Jesus. It doesn’t have to be complicated, and you don’t need a perfect answer or a rehearsed speech.

Someone asks, “What does 146 mean?”  You tell them it comes from John 14:6. You tell them what these words of that verse mean to you. You tell them who Jesus is to you. And then you let God take care of the rest.

We launched 146 on August 5, and in just a few weeks, hundreds of bracelets have shipped to six different states. We also have student ambassadors at two Christian universities, one in California and one in Oregon, putting bracelets directly into the hands of other students.

We also sent a shipment to the chaplain of a large university football program who is excited to share them with believers on the team and encourage them to start conversations of their own.

The word is spreading, and that’s what excites us most. Our hope is to see 146 make its way onto as many college campuses, into as many youth groups, and into as many homes as possible.

Because the bracelet itself was never the point. The conversation is.

We create a lot of digital content at Verity, and we believe that matters. But a video eventually ends, and you keep scrolling. A bracelet stays on someone’s wrist at soccer practice, on a college campus, at school, at work, or sitting across the table from a friend.

And sooner or later, someone may ask, “What’s 146?”

Now there’s a conversation that might never have happened otherwise.

Our initial goal is to put 100,000 146 bracelets into people’s hands and help spark millions of conversations about Jesus. Hundreds are already out there. Two college campuses are getting started. Bracelets are making their way onto a college football team. And a high school sophomore has already stood at soccer practice and told a teammate what Jesus means to him.

That’s how this grows: one bracelet, one question, one conversation at a time.
